* Fall Furniture Market Report #2

Posted on October 21st, 2009 by Amy. Filed under General, Sustainable Furnishings.

One of my favorite things (I know I am repeating myself!) about interior design is meeting and forming relationships with all the very special craftsmen, artists and furniture makers who are dedicated to providing the highest quality materials and furnishings. Now, a maker of Chinese inspired furniture has moved production to North Carolina! Not only an environmentally conscious decision to reduce energy required to ship wood to China and furniture back to the USA, but, we can now customize the pieces to fit specific situations. During my tour of the Big Yellow House to view the collections, the owner, Carol, introduced each piece in a way that you know it is carefully and thoughtfully considered many times over before it is released. You can almost feel the process from initial inspiration to final product.

Shadow was a very frisky, but, diligent model of each piece!

* Sustainable Furnishings Series - Natural Wool Carpet

Posted on March 12th, 2009 by Amy. Filed under Sustainable Furnishings.

We are excited about a new “Green” - Bio-Degradable Hemp and Wool Carpet! Bio-Floor is unlike any other produced in North America. It is COMPLETELY bio-degradable. This is achieved through the use of only 100% natural raw materials.
The Bio-Floor line is made with a face fiber of 100% natural wool. There are no moth-proofing or stain protections applied. Bio-Floor uses only naturally pigmented wool fibers for coloration as opposed to any of the harsh dyes and chemical bonding agents other carpet manufacturers use. To further differentiate this carpet, they use a natural “primary” of hemp and cotton. This is used instead of the traditional synthetic polypropylene “primary” . (The “primary” is the material that the tufting machine places the wool yarn into and acts to hold it in place.) Even the adhesive and backing are 100% natural and bio-degradable, made of natural rubber from the rubber tree and jute, a hardy, earth-friendly fiber-producing plant.
Not only is this product beautiful to look at but it sacrifices nothing in the way of indoor air quality and the environment.
